Finding the right resume template

A resume template is used as a guide as to how a professional resume should be laid out. Resume templates also provide helpful information as to what content should be included in a CV. Often taking a ‘fill-in-the-blanks’ approach, a resume template can help to short-cut the time-intensive process that is creating the perfect CV.

There are thousands of resume templates and resume samples available online that can be downloaded and updated. Many resume examples are specific to industry and offer helpful tips on exactly what employers in that industry are looking for. They offer inspiration and can often give examples of more creative, unconventional layouts.

However, there are risks that should be considered. When it comes to CV templates, one size doesn’t always fit all – standardisation isn’t always a good thing. You have a unique work history and unique skill set – and this should be reflected in your CV. In addition, while it is good to explore different ways of laying out your CV, some sample resumes can be too complex or embellished in their design, which can be off-putting to potential employers.

It is generally best to approach a resume template with a degree of pragmatism. While they can serve as a good inspiration and benchmark, nothing replaces creating your own, personal yet professional expression of your career story.
