About 30 minutes away from Melbourne’s CBD is Werribee, situated on the Werribee River and the Princes Halfway, and halfway between Melbourne and Geelong. Its local government area is the City of Wyndham, though it is also considered to be part of Greater Melbourne and has seen rapid population growth since the 1990s, gaining a reputation as a ‘commuter town’ thanks to its proximity to both Melbourne and Geelong.
Both of Werribee’s railway stations, Werribee railway station and Hoppers Crossing railway station, are part of the Melbourne metropolitan network and an extensive bus network also links Werribee with neighbouring suburbs. In addition to this, Wyndham City Council is one of the highest spending councils when it comes to bicycle infrastructure, ensuring Werribee is well served with bike paths and bike lanes.
Werribee’s CBD is located along Watton Street, although has been talk of developing Werribee’s infrastructure further by transforming the City of Wyndham into a high-tech city, with a multi-million dollar proposal to fund key roads, community facilities and services across the city, considered a “practical solution to deliver much needed infrastructure to one of Australia’s fastest growing areas” (Planning Minister Matthew Guy, 2016).
The suburb is well-known for its many tourist attractions, including Werribee Park, the Victoria State Rose Garden and Werribee Open Range Zoo. Werribee earned its name because the shape of the Werribee River valley and landscape are said to look like a backbone: ‘Werribee’ is an aboriginal name meaning ‘backbone’ or ‘spine’.
Currently Werribee is particularly popular amongst families thanks to its easy access to the city and relaxed countryside feel. However, with whispers of a major infrastructural redevelopment in the near future, it is likely that Werribee is going to become equally as popular amongst young professionals who can foresee the growth of this suburb and its imminently increasing prosperity.
Werribee is home to a number of accounting and legal firms including Holman & Associates, MP Tax, CS Consulting Group, Wyndham Partners and Mantello Lawyers.
