Only 6 kilometres away from Melbourne’s CBD, Brunswick is a stylish, vibrant suburb in Victoria and one of the 82 Major Activity Centres as outlined in the Melbourne 2030 Metropolitan Strategy, a Victorian Government strategic planning policy which aims to accommodate and contain urban development in the state.
Brunswick is one of the oldest suburbs in Melbourne and has a number of places of heritage significance such as Chimneys of Hoffmann’s brickworks, the large bluestone warehouses in Colebrook Street, Brunswick Tram Depot and Brunswick Baptist Church.
Just a 25 minute bike ride or 20 minute drive to the CBD, Brunswick itself is emerging as a major business district due to its proximity to the CBD, with many local professionals setting up companies based in the area. Public transport networks in this suburb are some of the best in Melbourne, with Jewell, Brunswick and Anstey stations serving the area on the Upfield railway line. Melbourne’s famous tram system also travels through the suburb: various routes go via Brunswick and the City from neighbouring areas.
As is typical of many inner-city suburbs, the area is unsurprisingly more popular with younger people than families, though it is well-catered to familial situations with a variety of educational institutions and lots of parks and recreational areas.
The arts are hugely important to Melbourne, and Brunswick in particular is known for embracing culture of all varieties. The Sydney Road Street Party is held every February as a prelude to the Brunswick Music Festival in March which celebrates blues, roots and world music.
As well as this, the beautiful street art that Melbourne is famed for can be found across the suburb, juxtaposing traditional architectural styles with contemporary art, showcasing Melbourne’s characteristically eclectic style.
Brunswick is home to a number of financial and accounting firms including ITP, Oxford Accounting group, Daley & Co and H&R Block Tax Accountants.
