What is an Infrastructure Architect?

Infrastructure Architects, sometimes referred to as Solutions Architects, are responsible for designing, implementing, and integrating information systems to fit within existing systems infrastructure.

Infrastructure Architects work alongside different business leaders and units in order to design solutions that achieve business goals while also working within existing and/or legacy systems.

What should be included in an Infrastructure Architect job description?

As Infrastructure Architects are required to deliver IT solutions, they need to be able to analyse business needs and design solutions within a specific timeframe and to budget. They must also:

  • Analyse existing systems to ensure security and efficacy
  • Maintain and upgrade software, hardware, and networks as needed
  • Recommend improvements or alternative technologies to better meet business needs
  • Design, review and integrate new systems

As the Infrastructure Architect often works with clients that are not technically savvy, they are often required to translate technical concepts into simple language, as well as translating business goals into technological solutions.

What skills and qualifications should an Infrastructure Architect have?

A highly technical role, Infrastructure Architects need to have a high level of IT knowledge. A tertiary education is not required, but demonstrable and broad knowledge of project management, web technologies and SaaS, enterprise architecture, networking, and database management.

Infrastructure Architects should also have skills in:

  1. Communication
  2. Leadership
  3. Creativity
  4. Problem-solving
  5. Analytical and critical thinking
  6. Time management
  7. Interpersonal/collaboration/teamwork.

Highly competent Infrastructure Architects stay on top of the latest trends and developments within the field, and can demonstrate this via professional development, certifications, membership within professional organisations, and active networking.

How much does an Infrastructure Architect earn?

$120,000 - $200,000
