How to create the perfect cover letter layout

Learning how to write a cover letter can be time-consuming, but once you have practiced it, it will become second nature. Investing the time to tailor and personalise your cover letter will always stand you in good stead when searching for a new job, and help your cover letter – and CV – stand out from the crowd.

Step 1 – Research

It’s critical that you do your research. Scrutinise everything that is available to you. This could include the job advertisement, the job description, the LinkedIn profile of the hiring manager, and the company website.

Step 2 – Draft

Draft your email, following the four-paragraph structure. Then, re-read it and ensure that it is personalised.

Step 3 – Proofread

Ideally, take a break and come back to your cover letter with fresh eyes. If possible, ask a trusted friend to proofread your cover letter. Remember, spell-checks and grammar-checks don’t always pick up everything, so you can’t beat human eyes for proofreading.
