Accounting jobs in 2015: Where's the work?

The Robert Half Salary Guide reveals that New South Wales and Victoria are the hot spots for accounting jobs in 2015, with chief financial officers (CFOs) noticeably more bullish than the rest of the country.

The bright lights of Sydney are particularly beckoning for accountants seeking improved career prospects this year.

New South Wales is more bullish

CFOs in NSW were more upbeat about the economy compared to the rest of Australia, with 56 per cent “very confident” compared to the 39 per cent national average. This follows the state recently regaining its position as Australia’s top economy for the first time since July 2011, according to Commonwealth Bank’s State of the States report.

Similarly, confidence concerning business expansion was the highest in NSW and Western Australia, particularly among CFOs at large companies compared to smaller organisations.

Remuneration trends

The improved sentiment was reflected in remuneration trends, with two thirds of Australian businesses surveyed planning to increase finance and accounting salaries in 2015, especially those at large companies (74 per cent) compared to smaller businesses (60 per cent).

And it is possible to negotiate on pay, with 66 per cent of Australian and 68 per cent of New Zealand management indicating a willingness to negotiate on salary with top candidates.

Candidate search is challenging

Finding the right candidate remains difficult for CFOs, with 94 per cent of Australian CFOs and 75 per cent in New Zealand describing it as “somewhat challenging” or “very challenging”, especially in Western Australia where 52 per cent said it was “very challenging”.

Nearly a third reported a lack of niche, technical experts (31 per cent in New Zealand and 28 per cent in Australia). For key skills in demand, business/financial analysis was the highest at 21 per cent, while in New Zealand; there is a skills shortage across the board, from general accounting skills right up to managerial positions.
